Mexico City (Day 6)
I tried hard not to play favorites with the children but this little girl (Sonia) was hard not to take photos of. She reminded me of a little Mexican doll you would buy at the market. Another one I wanted to pack in my carry on bag.
Nearing the end of the week we were running out of games to play with the children, so we had to start thinking of new ones. Enter the “Egg Toss”. We dressed them up in plastic coverings and garbage bags to protect their clothes and let them start tossing. Needless to say, there was only one winner and lots of messes. We ended the day with the usual puppet show.
We then proceeded through the crowded streets to downtown Mexico City, via the bus. The picture of Brandon holding onto the handrail was a very light crowd. There were days where there were people nearly hanging outside the door!
After visiting the “Pay Bathrooms” we proceeded to a park that had some boats in which we all got in and attempted to paddle around. It was worth the trip down just to see that. I honestly thought someone was going to go swimming! (You had to pay 40 pesos ($4.00) if you got your life jacket wet, so we were all very careful.)
After we got back to the church, a few of us visited the local university, UNAM (Universidad Nacional Auto’noma de Me’xico), and saw their famous library. The artist that did this building gathered small stones from all over the country and affixed them to the wall. Each color is the actual color of the stone, except for the blue. That was the one color he couldn’t find, so he had to use blue glass.
I had to post one picture to brag on my host (Ernesto). Ernesto is in his third year of school here where he is studying to be an architect. His class had a contest to see who could design the best solution for the bike rack that they are currently using. His design won first place, and there were TONS OF ENTRIES! Currently, they are still using the original design.
